Ellie is a character in the video games The Last of The states (2013) and The Last of United states of america Part II (2020) by Naughty Dog. She is portrayed by Ashley Johnson through motion capture and voice acting; in the upcoming television accommodation, she volition be portrayed by Bella Ramsey. In the first game, Joel Miller is tasked with escorting a 14-year-sometime Ellie beyond a post-apocalyptic United States in an endeavour to create a cure for an infection to which Ellie is immune. While players briefly assume command of Ellie for a portion of the game, the artificial intelligence primarily controls her actions, often profitable in combat by attacking or identifying enemies. Ellie reappeared every bit the playable character in the downloadable content prequel The Last of Us: Left Behind, in which she spends time with her friend Riley. In Function II, players control a 19-year-old Ellie as she seeks revenge on Abby for Joel's death.

Ellie was created by Neil Druckmann, the artistic managing director and writer of The Concluding of The states. Inspired by a mute graphic symbol proposed for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, he created her every bit a strong female grapheme who has a close relationship with Joel; throughout the kickoff game's development, the relationship between Ellie and Joel was the primal focus. Johnson inspired aspects of Ellie's personality, prompting Druckmann to brand her more agile in fighting hostile enemies. Post-obit comparisons to the likeness of Canadian actor Elliot Folio, Naughty Dog redesigned Ellie's advent to better reflect Johnson's personality and make her younger. For her performance in Part 2, Johnson considered her own experiences with anxiety and researched the effects of mail-traumatic stress disorder.

The character has been well-received past critics, with Ellie's human relationship with Joel most frequently the subject of praise. The strength and complexity of her character, and its subversion of the damsel in distress stereotype, have also been commended. A scene in which Ellie and Riley kiss in Left Backside drew social commentary and was commended as a leap for LGBT representation in video games. Johnson's functioning in Part Two was praised for her depiction of vulnerability and suffering. Both the character and performance received numerous awards and nominations, and have regularly placed favorably in polls and lists.

Ellie is smiling in the first image, and has short dark hair; she is facing right in the second image, with hair to her shoulders; she has a minor smirk in the third image, with hair on her fringe and down to her chin; and she has a blank look on her face in the fourth image, with no hair on her fringe.

The diverse iterations that Ellie'south physical advent underwent throughout development. Each design was tested with various hair colors and styles.[5]

The concept for Ellie began with an unused idea for Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves (2009). Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, directors of The Last of Us (2013), conceived a sequence with a mute female character who would accompany Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake; Druckmann felt this would create a "beautiful" relationship through gameplay alone.[vi] An early on alternative proper noun for the graphic symbol was Lily; Druckmann chose Ellie as he had considered the name for his girl.[7] Druckmann designed Ellie as a counterpart to Joel, the main playable grapheme of The Final of United states of america.[8] She was likewise intended to demonstrate that a graphic symbol bond could be created entirely through gameplay. Druckmann described the game as a coming of age story for Ellie, in which she adopts the qualities of a survivor.[six]

Casting [edit]

Ashley Johnson was cast as Ellie in The Last of Us shortly after her auditions;[9] the development team felt that she fit the part, particularly when acting alongside Troy Baker, who portrayed Joel. Johnson fabricated important contributions to Ellie's graphic symbol evolution. She convinced Druckmann to requite Ellie a more independent personality, and to make her more successful in combat.[10] As Ellie, Johnson's performances were more often than not recorded using motion capture technology which produced approximately 85% of the game's animations. The remaining audio elements were recorded afterwards in a studio.[11] Johnson was sometimes uncomfortable while performing "disturbing" scenes.[10] However, she was excited to play a rare example of a strong female person video game character.[12] For The Terminal of United states of america Office II (2020), Johnson considered her own experiences with anxiety, and researched the effects of mail-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with Druckmann.[13] In February 2021, Bella Ramsey was cast every bit Ellie in HBO's upcoming idiot box adaptation of the video games.[14]

Appearance [edit]

The team felt that establishing Ellie's appearance was disquisitional. They determined that she needed to announced young enough to make her relationship with Joel—who is in his 40s[15]—believable, simply old plenty to exist apparent as a resourceful teenager capable of surviving.[16] The team likewise considered Ellie of import for marketing; Druckmann said that, when asked to move the image of Ellie from the front end of the game'south packaging to the back, "anybody at Naughty Dog only flat-out refused".[17]

Following the annunciation of The Last of Us, comparisons were made betwixt Ellie and histrion Elliot Page. Page said that Naughty Dog had "ripped off" his likeness and that it was "not appreciated", as he was interim in another game, Beyond: Two Souls (2013).[xviii] According to game director Bruce Straley, Naughty Canis familiaris had no knowledge of Folio'southward interest in Across,[19] which was announced several months after The Last of U.s..[20] Kotaku observed that some players would likely confuse the characters.[18] Straley said that, following the comparisons, Naughty Dog revised Ellie'due south appearance because "nosotros want our characters to stand on their own two feet".[19] Druckmann and Straley said the change was made to ameliorate reflect Johnson'south personality and make her younger. It was revealed in a trailer in May 2012.[xix] [21]

For Office II, Ellie's look underwent years of iteration; the team wanted a logical transition from the start game while maintaining a "practical yet personal" outfit.[22] Lead grapheme artist Ashley Swidowski designed Ellie's optics to demonstrate a somberness; in the first game, Ellie had wider eyes to reflect her artless nature.[7] Ellie'southward moth was designed by California-based artist Natalie Hall afterwards the team struggled to settle on a pattern. Hall drew the tattoo on a programmer'south arm so the squad could visualize it. Druckmann felt that moths' obsession with light mirrored Ellie's obsession throughout the game, too as giving her a reminder of Joel.[23]

Writing [edit]

The Last of The states: Left Behind (2014) was written to specifically focus on the relationship betwixt Ellie and Riley, and to recount the events that defined their afterwards personalities.[24] Druckmann was also inspired by wars that took identify in Syria and Afghanistan; he felt that, like Ellie, conflict was familiar to the children in those countries.[25] Left Backside sees Riley'south behavior change Ellie, resulting in the latter'due south focus to fight in club to save those close to her. The squad was also interested in Ellie'due south behavior effectually Riley; she is perceived as existence more playful.[26] In Left Behind, Ellie and Riley share a osculation; the team considered omitting the buss from the game, but felt that it was imperative to the story and strengthened the relationship.[24] Though initially he only felt that Ellie viewed Riley as an influence, Druckmann afterward considered her romantic appeal, and decided to explore the concept.[27]

For Part 2, Druckmann recalled the team's excitement to explore Ellie farther as a protagonist, particularly developing the loss of her innocence, comparing it to the feeling of the writers of Breaking Bad (2008–2013) when given the opportunity to explore Walter White. The squad discussed creating a sequel without Ellie and Joel, but felt that they were less interesting.[28] Ellie's excitement for astronomy was based on Johnson's own interests, while her obsession with comics is based on Druckmann's babyhood.[29] Part II co-author and narrative lead Halley Gross felt that Ellie'southward decision to track down Abby was motivated past her desire to overcome her PTSD more than than her want to kill Abby.[thirty] Gross, who has suffered from PTSD, considered it her responsibility to accurately depict the subject matter;[31] she wanted players who might have suffered with trauma to sympathise that they are not alone.[32] The writers wanted to deconstruct the perception of violence in Joel and Ellie: while Joel is indifferent and applied, Ellie kills to maintain a "culture of honor" past attaching violence to her ego.[thirty] Some of the squad considered Ellie'south obsession with Abby akin to a drug addiction, and that Dina left as she felt that the obsession would never end.[33] Gross considered the game's final shot, wherein Ellie leaves behind the guitar that Joel gave her, represented Ellie moving on from his death to a new chapter. Druckmann felt that it represented Ellie finally overcoming her ego, merely preferred that the player create their own estimation.[30]

Gameplay [edit]

For The Final of Us, Ellie'due south artificial intelligence (AI) required significant overhauling of the game engine.[34] The team had her stay close to Joel, to avoid being viewed by players every bit a burden.[35] AI programmer Max Dyckhoff said that, to ensure Ellie made realistic decisions during gameplay, he considered "what she was going through" and "what her relationship with Joel and the enemies would be".[35] During the wintertime segment of The Last of Us, players presume control of Ellie. The developers ensured that this change, as well equally the knowledge of Ellie'south immunity, was kept surreptitious prior to the game'south release to surprise players.[8]

Grapheme [edit]

Ellie is described every bit "mature across her years" as a result of the circumstances of her surround.[36] She is characterized as potent, witty, and "a lilliputian rough effectually the edges".[36] Her emotional trauma is accentuated afterward her come across with David.[37] [38] Having lost many people in her life, she suffers from severe monophobia and survivor's guilt.[39] This results in her condign a very hardened person; she uses violence without hesitation[40] [41] [42] and ofttimes employs profane linguistic communication.[43] Ellie also feels worthless, believing her life is a burden and that her decease would be beneficial for others.[44] While she shows initiative, she is non every bit proficient at survival as Joel, beingness somewhat impulsive and naïve.[25] [45] She is unable to swim until Joel teaches her how sometime earlier the events of Part 2.[46] Despite this, she displays great physical resilience, emotional forcefulness, and complete fearlessness; this is demonstrated past her ability to expect later on both herself and Joel when he is severely injured. She constantly perseveres in dire situations.[47] [48] Ellie is a lesbian, pursuing female romantic interests in both Left Behind and Role II.[49]
